What is one to do for a New Denver Honda if the CR-V isn’t quite big enough and the Odyssey is just a little too much minivan to bear. Well, if you were reading this back in 2001 the answer would be, look for another auto maker. Fortunately Honda recognized the trend in North America towards bigger is better in 2002 with the introduction of the Honda Pilot in Denver. The Honda Pilot is the largest crossover SUV that Honda has to offer and is the only crossover from the auto maker to offer third row seating. The other option for a third row, as mentioned before, is the Odyssey which is well and firmly planted in the minivan camp. Prior to the Pilot becoming available Honda’s only offerings in the SUV or crossover market were the CR-V and the Passport. With the Passport simply a rebadging of the Isuzu Rodeo and the CR-V one of the smallest crossovers on the market Honda was well out of the full size SUV business. While the Honda Pilot in Denver isn’t a “true” SUV; it’s unibody construction, that makes it handle so much like a car, keeps it in the crossover category; it does have integrated perimeter frame rails that allow it to handle towing and some off road use making it a competitor in the SUV market, especially given it’s above average fuel consumption.

Honda Pilot in Denver 253 pound-feet of torque
In the powertrain department all of the Pilot’s receive the same treatment. A 3.5 liter, 24 valve, single overhead cam V6 that manages 250 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque. While this isn’t exactly a small engine the power just isn’t there, leaving the New Denver Honda a little behind it’s competitors with a sluggish take off. This 3.5, again in all trim levels, is fed by a five speed automatic transmission. Front wheel drive comes standard, but any model can be upgraded to an all wheel drive, that has some impressive technology. The AWD can shift as much as seventy percent of the power to the rear end when the front starts to slip. You can also opt to to engage “lock” mode where almost all of the power is diverted to the rear end in low gear to help get you unstuck if ever you should find yourself that way.
